About DCE | Computer CenterDCE Campus Wide Networks Present Setup DCE presently has around 150 computers connected as a LAN in its computer center in its two floors providing internet access (2 Mbps) and programming facilities to all software related laboratories of all the departments of the college, predominantly COE, IT, ECE, EE and Maths departments. The academic buildings/library/administrative blocks and all the hostels of DCE are interconnected using Wi-Fi with limited number of access points. The Administrative Block, Training and Placement Block, Convocation Hall and Library are also connected via CAT5 cables. Each of the departments need to have their own LANs to be later interconnected using the proposed Optical Fiber Cable Network (OFCN). COE department has its laboratories connected with its LAN as of now and Admin Block is partially networked. Presently Computer Center has the following equipment.
The present network setup satisfies only the basic needs of the Institute's rudimentary Internet connectivity and minimal resource sharing for the connected departments. To put DCE on par with IITs and reputed NITs, it is necessary to use Information Technology as the backbone for its academic, research, consultancy and administrative ventures and hence in the academic year ending March 2007 we have placed orders for 4 high end servers, gateway security solution system, E-mail server software, Internet bandwidth of 4 Mbps and 170 high end PC's for faculty members. Proposed Enhancements Nowadays, computing venue is shifting from a central place to the user's desktop. Users are everywhere and are connected to one another. DCE wishes to pro-actively support it. DCE Computing and Network Services will be including Administrative Computing Services, Campus Network, Central Servers, Internet Bandwidth, Departmental Servers and Computing Services Information services (electronic) from Central Library and Departments. For achieving the above facilities, DCE requires a network with a Gigabit Ethernet backbone using around 3000 m made of Single mode and around 2000 m Multimode Fiber as a part of a fiber optic backbone and cat6 cabling in all the blocks. College is in the process of setting up campus LAN to extend these facilities to each and every department, hostel, residential blocks, principal's residence, Guest house, canteen etc. in the college through a Canopy based hot zones providing wireless connectivity all over the campus till such time optical cabling is done. Another 200 Pentium-IV shall be added to the centre during 2007-08. The main objectives of computer center are:
